Liver function tests are a series of blood tests used to evaluate and monitor hepatic dysfunction treatment. Carbohydrates, proteins, and lipids are all metabolized by the liver. Enzymes and metabolic pathway end products serve as indicators of liver function. When liver function is compromised, biochemical markers show the extent of liver damage. Abnormal liver function tests may indicate preclinical liver disease, directing further diagnostic testing. Following the diagnosis of hepatic dysfunction, abnormal liver tests may indicate the presence of an underlying liver disorder, such as hepatitis, biliary obstructions, or infiltrative liver disease.
